The Australian rice industry has a history of progressive initiatives aimed at ensuring the sustainability of rice production in Australia for future generations.

The Rice Environment Policy was developed in September 2000 and is a proactive living document demonstrating the industry's intent towards environmental stewardship. This policy has been developed by representatives from all parts of the industry with input from a range of interest groups.

The success of the Rice Environment Policy rests in moving from intent to action. In addition to the actions and strategies already in place, the rice industry has developed a number of flagship programs to coordinate improved environmental management and stewardship.
