Submission to Senate References Committee on Education, Employment and Workplace Relations inquiry into education and training for agricultural businesses

In November 2011 the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia and Ricegrowers’ Limited (trading as SunRice) provided a joint submission on behalf of the Australian rice industry to the Senate References Committee on Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

 It was considered that the committee’s inquiry into education and training for agricultural businesses was very timely given the human resource difficulties faced by our industry moving back into full production after many years of drought.

 The joint submission addressed the following issues:

·     the nature of the labour shortage faced by the industry and its economic effects;

·     deficiencies and potential improvements relating to education and training, including its provision in the workplace, and at tertiary and secondary level; and

·     the difficulties associated with attracting and retaining employees in rural areas.

Submission to the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities on the Draft National Wildlife Corridors Plan

In April 2012 the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc (RGA) put forward a submission on the draft national wildlife corridors plan. Within that plan, a potential wildlife corridor that sits within the rice growing area of NSW has been identified. The RGA continues to support improved environmental stewardship through its Environmental Champions Program, and acknowledges the potential benefit of a government program to co-ordinate and better fund efforts to improve landscape connectivity in our region.

It is RGA’s strong view that the best environmental outcomes across the landscape occur through co-operative action between local private landholders, NRM groups and government agencies, with private landholder participation in environmental activities occurring voluntarily and on an economically justifiable basis.

RGA’s submission on the draft national wildlife corridors plan is made on the basis of that principle.
