Rice Growers commitment to Water Efficiency

Wednesday, 25 October 2006

The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc (RGA) has commenced an industry first project that will source water from irrigators for The Living Murray in return for on farm water efficiency projects.

This is the first project of its kind for irrigators to identify water savings at the farm level and further demonstrates the rice industry’s leadership in water management.

“The RGA strongly supports the implementation of all water savings options, but adequate time must be given to investigate and secure on farm water savings before Governments enter the water market to directly purchase permanent water for the Murray River,

“We acknowledge that if adequate water savings cannot be found from on farm works, Governments may have no option but to enter the water markets directly, said Mr Arthur

“All irrigators, not just rice growers, in the NSW Murray and Murrumbidgee Valleys are eligible to participate in the RGA Project and we encourage irrigators to look at all the water savings options that may be available on their farms,

“Eligible projects will include any works that lead to improved water management. This may involve activities such as laser levelling, piping or lining channels, storage dams, recirculation systems or other like projects. On farm water efficiency projects for which expenditure was incurred on or after 25 June 2004, the date of the signing of The Living Murray agreement will be eligible for funding under the RGA project, said Mr Arthur.

The RGA has employed Project Officers to work with irrigators in the NSW Murray and Murrumbidgee Valleys.

“Funding for the project has been made available by the MDBC under The Living Murray Initiative, said Mr Laurie Arthur, President.
