Friday, 3 November 2006 Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc (RGA) today welcomed the release of the Federal Government’s Water through Efficiency Tender which aims to buy water for The Living Murray whilst helping water users improve their water use efficiency. “RGA is pleased to support the Tender as the core principle is investment in improving the efficiency of irrigation infrastructure, said Mr Laurie Arthur, RGA President “Irrigators, under the Tender are able to exchange water for the finance of irrigation efficiency improvements on farm, “The Federal Government’s approach is preferable to direct government entry into the water market to acquire water entitlements and or licences as this would pose a high risk of distorting the market, said Mr Arthur “RGA also has a Living Murray Project based on similar principles. The RGA On Farm Water Efficiency Project is based on investment in water efficiency projects in return for water and is currently being rolled out to irrigators in the Murray and Murrumbidgee Valleys, Mr Arthur said “The RGA Project demonstrates the rice industry’s leadership and support of the MDBC’s Living Murray Project which aims to return 500 GL of water to the Murray River, Mr Arthur concluded.
