FIELD DAY PROVES RICE INDUSTRY’S RESILIENCE

Monday, 19 February 2007

Despite a devastating drought and most likely the smallest crop in the ground since 1961, the Rice Field Day will go on as planned this year.

“Research and development doesn’t just end during drought, however to reflect the smaller number of people growing rice this year, the Field Day will only be a half-day event,” said NSW DPI Rice Farming Systems Leader, John Lacy.

Highlights of the Field Day this year include a trial of aerobic rice; a trial of YRM68, a short duration, high yielding, medium grain rice; a trial by the University of Canberra seeking to determine the nutritional relationship between frogs and rice crops; a new screening technique for cold tolerance unique to Australia and two Japanese Yanmar headers will be on display.

“The Field Day provides a great opportunity for growers to learn how their research levy is being invested, as well as keeping up to date with the latest advances in rice research.”

“All rice growers are encouraged to attend.”

The Rice Field Day will be held at Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd, at “Old Coree” Jerilderie. Growers wishing to attend should contact their local NSW DPI District Agronomist for catering and transport information.

The Field Day will be held on 27th February 2007 commencing at 9am and finish with lunch at 1pm.

The Rice Field Day is a collaboration between NSW DPI, RGA, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), SunRice and Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd.
