Tuesday, 6 February 2007 The Ricegrowers Association of Australia (RGA) has announced the 2007 winners of the Greg Graham Memorial Scholarship and the Peter Connor Book Award. This annual award honours the memory of two selfless leaders of the rice industry during the 1970’s and 1980’s. 14 applications were received from children or grandchildren of RGA members who had completed at least one year of studying Agriculture at a tertiary level. The Greg Graham Memorial has been awarded to Antony Vagg of Bunaloo, near Deniliquin whilst the Peter Connor Book Award was won by Richard Malone of Finley. Antony Vagg is studying Agricultural Science at the University of Melbourne, Parkville. He has enthusiasm for and an understanding of all facets of the rice industry and intends to return to the family farm where he hopes to become involved in grower representation, particularly setting research directions. Antony said he was honoured to receive the award and have his name associated which such leaders. Richard Malone is studying Rural Science at the University of New England, Armidale. On completion of his degree, Richard aims to obtain professional employment in the Finley district providing technical assistance to farmers. A self-funded student, Richard said the scholarship would enable him to support himself during the 24 weeks of compulsory practical experience in 2 different climatic zones required by his course. The Greg Graham Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd and the McCaughey Trust. Mr Geoff Wright of Deniliquin, representing the sponsors on the selection panel, commented on the number and high standard of the applicants. “The future for leadership in agriculture is assured when you are able to see the excellent qualities and ability of young people from our region that are choosing to train and gain employment in agriculture, Mr Wright said.
