FEDERAL WATER PLAN DESERVES INVESTIGATION

Thursday, 22 February 2007

The Prime Minister’s $10 billion National Plan for Water Security deserves investigation and should not be held hostage by parochial State Governments, the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) said today.

RGA President Laurie Arthur, said that the significant amount of money on the table for improving irrigation infrastructure deserved support. “In my travels around the Murray Darling Basin, I have seen irrigation infrastructure in desperate need of improvement in all States that would benefit from an upgrade. This would not only deliver water savings, but would improve farm productivity and efficiency.”

“Based on the Federal Government’s undertakings that there will be no compulsory acquisitions and that irrigators’ property rights will be protected, I believe all governments have a responsibility to take a good look at the package.”

“The Premier of NSW, Morris Iemma is to be commended on his decision to give in-principle support the package. He understands that the security of the Murray-Darling Basin goes beyond State borders and is prepared to look at the package in the national interest but at the same time ensuring the rights of water users are respected.”

“The RGA also believes the package is worth investigation and would encourage all States to give it the consideration it deserves.”
