Wednesday, 18 July 2007 The President of the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA), Laurie Arthur announced at the RGA Central Executive meeting yesterday that he would not be seeking re-election. RGA President for the last five years, Mr Arthur feels the time is right for him to seek new challenges. “Leading the RGA has been a pleasure and an honour,” he said. “The rice industry is one of the most positive and resilient industries in Australia and the RGA is one of the most highly respected agricultural lobby groups.” “The job has been made easy due to the dedication and professionalism of the RGA Staff and the support of a committed group of growers who serve on the RGA Central Executive.” Mr Arthur noted the highlights of his tenure included the RGA’s work on negotiating with the Australian Government on the National Water Initiative which delivered irrigators a property right and the recent work on the $10 billion National Plan for Water Security. “Working to secure irrigators rights and promoting a place for the rice industry in Australia has been the most rewarding part of the role.” Mr Arthur said the drought had been the toughest issue to deal with as President. “Low allocations have obviously impacted on RGA members and the rice industry more broadly,” he said. “It has been difficult watching fellow farmers and communities suffer through the drought.” “But we’re a strong industry and there are many talented and dedicated growers serving the RGA so the future is bright.” Mr Arthur will serve until the new President is elected at the RGA’s Central Executive AGM in September.
