Tuesday, 4 September 2007 Barham farmer, Les Gordon, was elected unopposed as President of the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) at the annual meeting of the Central Executive in Jerilderie yesterday. Mr Gordon replaces Laurie Arthur who stepped down from the position. Mr Gordon has been the RGA’s Senior Vice President since 1999 and is currently the Chairman of the RGA’s Environmental Working Group and the Social Policy Committee. Mr Gordon has been the President of the RGA’s Wakool Branch since 1996. Mr Gordon was also a member of the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council, Community Advisory Committee (CAC). In accepting the Presidency, Mr Gordon highlighted the current difficulties being faced by the industry. “Obviously the rice industry is going through a tough time at the moment, but the industry has a strong track record of working together through adversity, so while it’s a very challenging time to be President, it’s business as usual as we continue to tackle the drought head-on,” Mr Gordon said. In other elections yesterday, Rob Houghton from Whitton was elected Senior Vice President and Warren Lang from Finley was elected Junior Vice President. CONTACT |
