Monday, 8 October 2007 The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc (RGA) has acknowledged the need for the recent compliance action taken by the NSW Department of Water & Energy for Murray Groundwater Licence holders. “As irrigators, any water user who tries to circumvent compliance with their water licence and/or use licence, including inappropriate use of water and lack of metering, is effectively stealing from their neighbour or the future,” said Mr Les Gordon President “RGA understands that the current drought is severely affecting farmers, their families and their farm business,” said Mr Gordon “However, using water illegally, by whichever means is not the answer, “There are a number of unintended consequences of such actions, including threats to the sustainability of the aquifer, risk and cost of pump and crop failures and in some cases the risk of a permanent decline in water quality for some bores by sideways movement of saline water,” Mr Gordon said. “I urge all surface and groundwater water users to comply with the law so that we can get through this difficult time together equitably,” concluded Mr Gordon.
