FIXED CHARGES MUST BE WAIVED

Monday, 3 December 2007

The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc (RGA) has again called for the NSW Government to waive the fixed water charges due now on water that irrigators did not receive in the 2006/07 irrigation year.

“Irrigators are continuing to feel the effects of the Millennium drought. In the Murray and Murrumbidgee Valleys, general security irrigators have zero allocations this year, said Mr Les Gordon, President.

“Rice growers and other irrigators are receiving bills they can’t afford to pay, for services they effectively haven’t received and it is no longer appropriate for these irrigators to be required to pay fixed charges for water they are did not get,

“Irrigators have sympathy for State Water, which as a business must continue to receive revenue to survive. RGA supports that State Water continues to levy fixed charges, but in these exceptional circumstances, RGA believes that those charges must be picked up and paid by the NSW government, Mr Gordon said.

“The RGA calls on the NSW Government to further assist irrigators in the worst drought on record by making an ex gratia payment to State Water for the fixed charges bills that irrigators are now required to pay for the 2006/07 irrigation season, concluded Mr Gordon.
