DROUGHT DOESN’T STOP RICE FIELD DAY!

Monday, 18 February 2008

Despite the on-going drought and resulting low rice production, the Rice Field Day will go on as planned this year.

John Lacy, the NSW DPI Rice Farming Systems Leader, encouraged all growers to attend the Field Day. “The drought hasn’t stopped the industry undertaking a range of research that will be of great interest to growers,” he said. “With limited resources, the research currently underway is focussed around water use efficiency and the sites on display highlight future opportunities in this area.”

Highlights of the Field Day this year include:

  • A trial utilising cold water to screen rice populations for cold tolerance.
  • An evaluation of parental material for possible aerobic rice production.
  • The opportunity to see four generations of the pure seed scheme.
  • A chance to meet the NSW DPI’s new Cereal Chemist, Dr Rachelle Ward.

• A trial, with SST in Jerilderie, of variable rate seeding and nitrogen application using the latest technology software.

• A demonstration of inter-row, cereal stubble and precision sowing using GPS guidance with 2.5cm accuracy.

“The Field Day provides a great opportunity for growers to learn how their research levy is being invested, as well as keeping up to date with the latest advances in rice research,” said Les Gordon, President of the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA). “I encourage all rice growers to attend.”

This year, the RGA’s sponsor, Wesfarmers Federation Insurance have provided a Picnic Pack as a prize for one lucky Field Day attendee.

The Rice Field Day will be held at Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd, at “Old Coree” Jerilderie. Growers wishing to attend should contact their local NSW DPI District Agronomist for catering purposes and transport information

The Field Day will be held on 26th February 2008 commencing at 8.45am and finishing with lunch at 1pm.

The Rice Field Day is a collaboration between NSW DPI, RGA, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), SunRice and Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd.
