Friday, 21 November 2008 The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc. has received $185,500 funding through the Federal Government’s Caring for our Country Open Grants announced today to take stock on climate change and set priorities. The funding will enable the industry to work with a range of organisations and draw together current knowledge about greenhouse gas emissions and climate change issues. The project will also facilitate the identification of gaps and help streamline and improve information for growers. “There has been a huge increase in the amount of climate change focussed events and information over the past year.” Ricegrowers Association President Les Gordon said “It is important that the rice industry continues to work closely with all the organisations playing a role in climate change issues and facilitates collaboration” “A decision on the inclusion of agriculture in Australia’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme will be made in 2013. This is also an opportunity to ensure the industry has a full picture of our specific issues to enable effective participation in the debate leading up to that decision” said Mr Gordon “This project will put the industry in a positive position of understanding our specific issues, identifying any knowledge gaps and getting practical information on emissions management to our growers” he said. The rice industry has a strong history of leadership on climate change issues being the first agricultural industry to develop a greenhouse strategy in 2002 and greenhouse scorecard in 2003. These initiatives are delivered to growers through the Environmental Champions Program. The new funding will also focus on bringing up to date, practical information and tools to growers on reducing emissions and on farm. CONTACT |
