Finally – Authority for the Murray Darling Basin

Friday, 15 May 2009

The President of the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) Les Gordon has welcomed Minister Wong’s announcement yesterday of the appointment of the Chairman and Members of the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA).

Mr Gordon said that it is good news that we finally we have an independent Authority for the Murray Darling Basin.

“The Chairman, Michael Taylor AO, is well known and respected by agricultural industries and rural communities and has extensive experience across a range of areas which will have to be addressed by the new Authority. The new Members will bring a diverse set of skills and knowledge to the Authority”.

“Because of the complexities involved in developing the new Basin Plan, extensive consultation with the Basin’s industries and communities will be required. The RGA looks forward to working with the new Board to develop a Basin Plan which considers social and economic objectives as well as environmental ones” Mr Gordon said.

He added that “their task has been made more difficult by the delay to the announcement of the Authority Board and we will look forward to discussing with the Board a timeline and the processes which they will implement to ensure that adequate consultation takes place.”
