Wednesday, 24 June 2009 The Ricegrowers Association of Australia Inc congratulates the Caldwell Cluster Group, participants in the Environmental Champions Program, after they took out the community group award at the Murray Catchment Management Authority’s Natural Resource Management Awards on Friday night. The Group was recognised for their vision, leadership and hard work in adopting sound land management practices, working toward sustainable land use and enhancing their area on behalf of the community. The Group, led by Tim and Penni Douglas-Garden have shown unstoppable commitment and passion despite the severe drought conditions they have experienced over recent years. Some of the Group’s achievements, with the assistance of the Murray Wetlands Working Group, the Cadell Land and Water Management Plan and the Environmental Champions Program, include - developing farm plans, protecting and enhancing 814 hectares of native vegetation, and flooding six on-farm wetlands totalling 188 hectares. Specifically through the Environmental Champions Program the Group has installed a waste oil recycling facility, compliant chemical storage sheds, received training in managing farm greenhouse gas emissions and run community talks on local waterways. This regional award qualifies the Caldwell Cluster Group to contest the NSW State Landcare Awards in September this year. The Environmental Champions Program is an initiative of the Australian Rice Industry and provides a streamlined approach to natural resource management. www.environmentalchampions.rga.org.au A video case study of the Cladwell Cluster Group can be viewed at the above website.
