Monday, 13 July 2009 If you're a landholder who's keen to go green, reduce emissions, and save money while you’re at it, head to the Ricegrowers Association of Australia's Farm Efficiency Field Day on Wednesday 29 July 2009. An initiative of the RGA's Environmental Champions Program (ECP), the field day at Conargo Hall and Recreation Reserve will demonstrate practical ways farm businesses can reduce greenhouse gases. ECP Regional Coordinator in the Murray region, Neil Bull, said up until now the majority of greenhouse workshops held for farmers have been information based. The practical focus of the ECP field day is believed to be the first of its kind when it comes to carbon reduction. "From carbon emissions to carbon sequestration and Carbon Pollution Reduction Schemes, there's a lot of greenhouse-related talk out there at the moment," he said. "Landholders want to know how to reduce emissions on farm in practical ways which make business sense, but that information is hard to find. Our Farm Efficiency Field Day will de-mystify the carbon chatter and demonstrate actions and innovations that can be incorporated into a farm business today. Mostly it's about efficient practices and use of inputs, which as we all know also saves money!" Mr. Bull said a great line up of speakers had been confirmed for the free event, including CSIRO experts, engineers and other farmers. "The focus is on showcasing practices and technologies that can provide a range of benefits," he said. "We'll be looking at how to reduce emissions in different ways, from nitrogen and soil moisture management, to pump efficiency, diesel to LPG conversions, and even irrigation layouts. It promises to be a great day and all landholders are welcome, rice growers or not." Mr. Bull said the Farm Efficiency Field Day was a part of the RGA's Climate Priorities Project. Funded by the Australian Government's Caring For Our Country scheme, the project examines predicted changes to climate in the NSW Riverina; greenhouse gas emissions from rice based farming systems; emissions management in rice based farming systems; and climate change adaptation. The day-long event kicks off at 10am, Wednesday 29 July 2009, with morning tea served from 9.30am. For more information or to RSVP contact Neil Bull on 03 5898 3345. CONTACT |
