ADDITIONAL GENERAL SECURITY WATER ALLOCATIONS MOST WELCOME

Tuesday, 19 January 2010

The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) has today welcomed the announcement of additional general security water allocations of 3% in both the in the Murray and Murrumbidgee Valleys.

RGA Executive Director, Ruth Wade, said the regular allocation announcement by Mr David Harriss, Commissioner of NSW Office for Water (NOW), was much anticipated and is greatly appreciated.

“This will provide a major boost to the rice industry as many growers had reported that last week’s extremely hot weather had pushed water use to the full extent of available water.”

“While our production this season will still be well below an average crop, most growers will now be much more confident about being able to finish their crops and get reasonable yields and returns.”

“Recent media reports that New South Wales would release water from the Menindee Lakes to South Australia for environmental flows had caused some concern to NSW irrigators. They will be happy that New South Wales are seeking ways to maximize the efficient use of the flood waters from the northern part of the Basin and have found a way to provide equitable access to this water for both irrigators and the environment.
