Rice Growers Delivered a Secure Future

Friday, 25 June 2004

The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc (RGA) congratulates the Council of Australian Governments (CoAG) in signing an historic agreement that secures Australia’s water resources for the future.

The National Water Initiative (NWI), agreed upon by governments today, sets new standards for the management of Australia’s water resources that will ensure certainty for irrigators, the environment and regional communities.

President of the RGA, Mr Laurie Arthur said that the federal and state governments have overcome state boundaries and politics to provide the certainty required by rice growers to plan and invest in the future of their businesses.

“The Australian rice industry is the most efficient in the world and this agreement will enable our growers to reach higher levels of efficiency by investing in the latest science, technology and innovation, said Mr Arthur.

“Today’s successful CoAG outcome has been made possible by the cooperative approach to negotiation taken by all involved. This includes governments, irrigators, the environment and banking sector, said Mr Arthur.

In particular, the RGA would like to recognise the united approach of our peak farmer and irrigation organisations, the National Farmers Federation and the NSW Irrigator’s Council. In addition we pay tribute to the leadership of the Prime Minister John Howard, Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson and NSW Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Craig Knowles.

The rice industry looks forward to a brighter future - one of certainty for irrigator’s, their communities and the environment.
