Monday, 6 September 2004 The Ricegrowers' Association of Australia launches new internet site, 'About Rice', that provides lesson plans and teachers notes for the community and schools wanting to know more rice. The website provides information suitable for use by teachers and students in primary and secondary schools and provides a junior secondary teaching unit on the growing, processing and marketing of Australian rice. “The website, written by the NSW Department of Education and Training, aims to meet the rising demand from students and teachers wanting to know more about this vital staple food,” said Ms Claudine Menegazzo, RGA Public Relations Manager. “The United Nations 2004 International Year of Rice declaration has generated a lot of interest from schools and we wanted to meet this demand whilst providing a long term educational resource,” said Ms Menegazzo. Primary and secondary teachers can use the material to plan activities and to assist students in meeting learning outcomes related to agricultural communities in Australia and the growing and marketing of a primary product. Secondary teachers will find the unit of work will match the curriculum of any state or territory and involves the case study of an Australian farming community. “Whilst Australia is one of the countries newest to rice, it has influenced the character of the Southern Riverina area of Australia and has become a major export of economic importance,” said Ms Menegazzo. The website will be able to satisfy the curriculum requirements of states and territories by providing teachers notes and fact sheets. It will also satisfy the NSW Years 7-10 geography syllabus Topic 5A2 Changing Australian Communities.
