Wednesday, 1 December 2004 Over 7,000 Australians turned out to witness a spectacular new Guinness World Record for the World’s Biggest Risotto – which weighed in at a massive 7510kg on 26 November, 2004, Circular Quay, Sydney. The event was the brainchild of the Australian Rice Industry and was implemented to support the United Nations’ declaration of 2004 as the International Year of Rice, and to raise money to combat world hunger. The massive recipe included more than one and a half tonnes of quality Australian SunRice arborio rice, close to a tonne of the world’s best grade one peas, kindly provided by Birds Eye, and 4,400 litres of Campbell’s Real Stock Vegetable. Other ingredients include 320 kilograms of Perfect Italiano parmesan cheese, 1.5 kilograms of MASTERFOODS Saffron, 80 litres of Always Fresh Pure Olive Oil, 20 kilograms of Jensens Crushed Garlic, almost half a tonne of Moraitis Fresh Produce diced onion and celery and 320 kilograms of Australian unsalted butter from the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. Over 4,000 servings of the dish were sold on the day for a gold coin donation to CARE Australia, to combat world hunger and the remaining risotto donated to homeless shelters in and around Sydney. Claudine Menegazzo, Public Relations Manager for the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia, said; “The event was a tremendous success. We were delighted to have been able to set a new World Record, and would like to thank the Australian public for turning out to support the event – and extend our particular thanks to the celebrity chefs; Darren Simpson, Gabriel Gaté, Lyndey Milan, and Simon Thomson, and to the companies who donated the ingredients required make this mammoth dish.” For images: Visit - http://www.rga.org.au/news/mediaresources.asp CONTACT |
