Monday, 21 February 2005 Two university students from the Wakool area have been awarded scholarships offered by the Australia rice industry. Gemma Gordon, from Barham, was awarded the Greg Graham Memorial Scholarship which is jointly sponsored by Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd (RRAPL) and the McCaughey Trust. The runner-up, Anthony Thomas, of Barham, received the Peter Connor Book Award. These awards are presented each year to RGA members who are studying a full-time agricultural course at any Australian tertiary institution. The awards consist of financial scholarships that can be used by the students to assist in their studies. The awards are named after two past leaders of the rice industry. Greg Graham was president of the RGA when he died suddenly on New Years Day in 1983. He was actively involved in the irrigation and rice industry, as well as his local community of Deniliquin. Peter Connor was a leading rice grower in the Coleambally area, and was vice president of the RGA as well as a board member of the Ricegrowers’ Co-operative. This year, RGA received applications from five students from across the rice-growing area for the two scholarships. RGA Acting Executive Director, Deb Kerr, said “the standard of all the applications we received was very high. It was extremely difficult for the interview panel to choose just two students – they were all very deserving.” “Gemma Gordon is a very deserving winner and her knowledge and passion for the rice industry earned her the respect of the interview panel”, Mr Arthur said. Gemma Gordon is studying for a double degree Agricultural Science and Business at La Trobe University Bundura and Anthony Thomas is completing Certificate IV in Agriculture at the University of Melbourne Longerenong.
