Wednesday, 25 May 2005 The Australian Rice Industry today condemned reports that it takes 21,000 litres of water to produce a kilogram of rice. “This is simply not supported by the facts,” said RGA President, Laurie Arthur today. “The CSIRO Report ‘Balancing Act’ quotes water use figures that are simply ludicrous,” he said. “To even state that it takes that much water to grow a kilo of rice insinuates stupidity of monumental proportions.” “If it was remotely true that it took 21,000 litres, the Australian rice industry would use more water to grow a crop than currently even exists in the whole Murray-Darling system.” The average rice crop uses between 1,600 - 2,000 litres of water to produce one kilo of this staple food, that’s 10 times less than the allegations. “It is outrageous that this premier scientific organisation could get it so wrong,” said Mr Arthur.
