Rice Grower Chosen For National Young Farmers Forum

Wednesday, 13 July 2005

Rice grower Nathan Hehir (26) has been chosen to represent the Ricegrowers' Association of Australia (RGA) at the National Young Farmers Forum in Canberra.

Nathan currently farms with his parents on their irrigation and dry area properties near Finley and Berrigan.

Educated at Finley High School and Scots College Albury, Nathan spent a gap year working in the local area as well as on stations in Queensland before completing an Advanced Diploma of Farm Management from the University of Sydney (Orange).

Nathan is now working on the family farms and has also managed cropping programs for other local farmers. He hopes the National Young Farmers Forum will provide him with a stepping stone to getting involved in the industry as a way to complement his farming skills.

The National Young Farmers Forum has been organised by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and is a unique event which will allow participants to develop action pathways to take advantage of key opportunities or overcome barriers that exist in their rural industries.

The National Young Farmers Forum will come up with clear initiatives that delegates can take home with them to drive policy and programs at an individual, community, industry and government level.

The Forum will be held over two days in Canberra from September 1, and is open to people aged between 18 and 35 who can demonstrate their commitment to agriculture, fisheries or forestry.
