RGA Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary At Conference

Wednesday, 20 July 2005

The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) will be celebrating its 75th Anniversary at this year’s Annual Conference by asking “Why Rice?”

”With the recent incorrect media coverage around rice water use, it is timely for the industry to come together and reaffirm our place at the forefront of Australian agriculture,” said RGA President, Laurie Arthur. “We’ve been here 75 years, and regardless of what the metropolitan media say, we’re not going anywhere!” he said.

“When we ask ‘why rice’ we reflect that our Members feed up to 40 million people around the world every day; we generate more than $500 million from value added exports annually and we support around 60 regional towns in the NSW Riverina and Northern Victoria,” he said. “I encourage all Members to come along to the Conference and get involved in their Association.”

Highlights of this year’s Conference will include:

Scientists from CSIRO will speak on their recent research which has found a dramatic improvement in water use by irrigators.

The rice industry’s Environmental Champions Program will be officially launched by Senator Richard Colbeck, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Professor Bob Miles from the Central Queensland University will address Conference on the topic “Does ethanol provide a credible diversification opportunity for regional Australia?”

Rabobank will run its very popular and timely workshop on Succession Planning, giving growers the tools to approach this sensitive topic and providing the information to assist them plan succession for their business.

“The support of our Conference sponsors, SunRice, Murrumbidgee Irrigation, Rabobank and the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, means we have been able to keep registration costs low and we thank them for their ongoing assistance,” said Mr Arthur.

This year’s conference will be held at the Hay Services Club, on 11 August 2005. To register, contact the RGA on 6953 0433.
