Ethanol On The Agenda At Ricegrowers Conference

Monday, 1 August 2005

The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) will explore the issue of ethanol production and its impact on regional and economic development at its Annual Conference in Hay on 11 August 2005.

Professor Bob Miles, the Executive Director of the Institute for Sustainable Regional Development at the Central Queensland University in Rockhampton will speak to delegates on the topic "Does ethanol provide a credible diversification opportunity for regional Australia?"

“With growing interest in renewable energy throughout Australia, it may be possible that ethanol can provide opportunities for new industries in rural areas,” said RGA President, Laurie Arthur.

Professor Miles, in his presentation to the International Ethanol Conference in Brisbane earlier this year, highlighted statistics from a Canadian ethanol plant that showed substantial employment outcomes and economic returns for farmers and the regional communities they support.

“It is the international experience which will be of great interest to rice growers,” said Mr Arthur. “With an ethanol plant proposed for Coleambally, this presentation is timely and we are pleased that Professor Miles has agreed to address conference.” Mr Arthur said.

The RGA’s Annual Conference will be held at the Hay Services Club on 11 August 2005. To register, contact RGA on (02) 6953 0433.
