Rice Industry Scholarships Awarded

Monday, 6 March 2006

Two university students from the Mayrung area have been awarded scholarships offered by the Australia rice industry.

Alexander Schultz was awarded the Greg Graham Memorial Scholarship which is jointly sponsored by Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd (RRAPL) and the McCaughey Trust. The runner-up, David Jarrott, Mayrung received the Peter Connor Book Award.

These awards are presented each year to RGA members who are studying a full-time agricultural course at any Australian tertiary institution. The awards consist of financial scholarships that can be used by the students to assist in their studies.

The awards are named after two past leaders of the rice industry. Greg Graham was president of the RGA when he died suddenly on New Years Day in 1983. He was actively involved in the irrigation and rice industry, as well as his local community of Deniliquin. Peter Connor was a leading rice grower in the Coleambally area, and was vice president of the RGA as well as a board member of the former Ricegrowers’ Co-operative Ltd.

This year, RGA received applications from 22 students from across the rice-growing area for the two scholarships. RGA Policy Manager, Deb Kerr, said “the Association has been overwhelmed by the number of applicants this year and all would have made outstanding recipients,”

“Alexander Schultz had a surprisingly deep knowledge of the industry, a good understanding of the issues that face the rice industry and was very good at using logic to support his views. Alex was also a personable young man and an excellent representative of the industry, said Mr Les Gordon, Chairman of the interview panel

“David also interviewed particularly well, has a good understanding of the world around him and has a clear view on what he needs to do to get the best out of himself,

“The interview panel is confident that both men will go on to make a solid contribution to the rice industry in the future in their chosen fields, as will all of the applicants that were interviews, said Mr Gordon.

“We would encourage all the applicants that were unsuccessful to apply again next year, especially those that who are undertaking their first year of study this year.”

Alexander Schultz is studying an Agricultural Science degree at Charles Sturt University, Wagga. Alexander believes this degree will provide him with a balance between science, management and industry requirements and will assist him in the future when he eventually returns to the family farm, which produces rice and winter crops.

David Jarrott is studying an Agriculture (Agronomy) degree also at Charles Sturt University, Wagga. David is keen to progress his knowledge of agriculture and has tailored his studies to include irrigation, cropping and soil subjects. David is intending to focus his career in the agronomy or irrigation sectors.
