Rice industry launches inaugural Environmental Champions Leadership Program

Thursday, 15 June 2006

Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc (RGA) President Laurie Arthur today announced the 25 people chosen to take part in the inaugural Environmental Champions Development and Leadership program.

Laurie Arthur, said the program is supported by the rice industry and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, under the Pathways to Industry EMS program. The program will build on the capacity of those participating to contribute to their communities and the industry at large.

“It is vital we provide such opportunities to growers and industry representatives as people are our greatest assets, it’s the same philosophy that underpins the Environmental Champions Program” he said.

The 2006 program will be held over 2 months at different locations across the rice growing region, with the participants undertaking training provided by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation.

The program will focus on self development, working collaboratively together and industry and regional natural resource management issues.

The 25 successful participants are made up of majority landholders participating in the Environmental Champions Program, and regional industry representatives such as Irrigation companies, SunRice and rice research who support the program. There are 11 women and 14 men from across the region.

The Environmental Champions Program was developed six years ago as a strategic pathway for environmental improvement and as a mechanism to demonstrate environmental performance. Since being implemented three years ago, participation in the voluntary program is over 211 farm businesses and growing.
