Good news continues for Australian rice industry

28 Nov 2012 1:20 PM - SunRice wins export Award!

The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) has today congratulated SunRice for being named National Regional Exporter at the 50th Australian Export Awards in Canberra last night.

RGA President, Les Gordon, said “What a difference a couple of years can make.  This is an outstanding result for a company which was forced to scale back its operations in the Riverina to a bare minimum as the impact of the drought saw rice growers virtually unable to produce rice in the region.

Full credit must be given to the Directors and Management team at SunRice for placing the company in a position to be able to quickly resume operations and regain export markets once growers were able to produce rice again.”

Mr Gordon said the SunRice story has provided much needed good news for our growers. “Their success in re-establishing and continuing to extract premiums from those markets benefits us all.  Over the past year we have seen the company generate more than a billion dollars in revenue, return Australian rice to the world, re-establish important export markets, re-open the Coleambally Rice Mill, and pay an additional bonus payment to growers.

We have received an overwhelmingly positive response to the bonus payment as it is not only good news for our growers but it has translated into cash and opportunity for our growers, our service providers and our regional communities.”

Mr Gordon concluded “We are absolutely delighted with this award and understand that it has been achieved because of hard work, commitment to the industry and determination from everyone in the company.”
