RGA 2012 Annual Conference

The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) has announced its 2012 Annual Conference will focus on the theme “Growing our future”. The conference will be held on Thursday, 9 August 2012 in Hay NSW.
RGA President Les Gordon said, “After a challenging period, we are growing our way back into business in the Riverina and around the globe and this theme recognises the re-emergence of the Australian rice industry.”
Keynote speaker for the conference will be Mr Rob Gordon, CEO of SunRice, who joined SunRice in 2012, bringing with him 25 years of senior strategic experience, particularly in the food and agribusiness sectors. He will speak about the return of Australian rice to global markets and the responsibilities and opportunities ahead for the rice industry in helping to ensure both food and nutritional security in a resource-constrained world.
Other guest speakers include Ben Barlow, who has held senior executive positions with leading banks in Australia and overseas, and who has now returned to his home in Hay to focus on “growing agriculture”. Julie Evans from the Bureau of Meteorology will present information on Bureau technologies and tools, with an emphasis on weather information for rice growers. Tracey Allen from Rabobank will speak about global agricultural commodity markets, and Tom Rooney from Waterfind will present information on important issues to assist us in “Growing our Future”.
Mr Gordon said, “the RGA is continuing the popular post-conference tour, which will include a visit to “Cobran Station” (Twynam) and Ben Barlow’s property “Ulonga”.
The RGA 2012 Annual Conference will be held at the Hay Services Club on Thursday 9 August 2012 from 10.00am – 5.00pm. Dinner will follow at the Spirit of Anzac Centre at the Hay War Memorial High School from 6.15pm. Conference is free to financial RGA members and their partners. Non members and non financial members are welcome to attend at a cost of $60 per person. Dinner is $45 per person.

As an added bonus this year for those wanting to know more about land management in the rangelands of the Hay district and beyond, head into town a day or two early and attend the “Re-valuing our Rangelands” forum being hosted by Murrumbidgee Landcare Inc and Hay Trees on Plains Landcare. This one-day forum on Wednesday, 8 August 2012 will cover topics including carbon farming in rangelands, rangeland biodiversity monitoring, landscape rehabilitation and the impact on flora and fauna of changing stock and domestic water systems, and will be preceded by a field trip to sites of interest around the Hay district on Tuesday 7th. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Registration for Landcare members is $60; $100 for non-members.
