The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc. (RGA) welcomes the joint announcement by the Minister for the Environment, the Minister for Agriculture and the Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment to enact the 1500 gigalitre cap on water buybacks.

RGA President, Les Gordon said that this is good news for the rice industry and delivers on a promise made by the Prime Minister in 2012.

“We welcome the move by the Federal Government to place a cap on water buybacks as it delivers certainty to our growing regions and their supporting communities. We are hopeful that the Government will also soon be able to announce a timeframe for the buybacks,” said Mr Gordon.

“It is also great to see this announcement come about following a tour of the Murray Darling Basin by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment The Hon Bob Baldwin.

“Mr Baldwin was able to meet with rice industry representatives and local community groups in February 2015 and we are pleased that our calls for the Government to provide certainty for communities and farmers have been heard.”

Mr Gordon continued, “Traditionally Amendments to the Water Act have been bipartisan and it would be good if the Labor Party continued this tradition and supported this legislation.”
