The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia Inc. (RGA) welcomes the announcement by the Minister for the Environment and the Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment that the Government intends to legislate the 1500GL cap on water purchases under the Murray Darling Basin Plan.

RGA President, Les Gordon said that this is good news for the rice industry and delivers certainty to growing regions and communities.

"The RGA has been working behind the scenes with senior Ministers, members of parliament, advisers and associated industry groups to secure this commitment and we are pleased that our calls for the Government to provide certainty for communities and farmers have been heard."

Mr Gordon continued, "Thanks must also go to the Labor Party for their bipartisan support for the legislation, subject of course to the support of the Basin states."

The RGA encourages the Government to provide irrigators with additional certainty by acting on this announcement as soon as possible.
