22 May 2012 4:29 PM - Water trading opportunities
The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) has encouraged all users of water – including its members and environmental users – to consider the benefits of newly available River Reach water trading opportunities.
RGA President Les Gordon says the product represents an opportunity for rice growers, other irrigators and environmental water users alike.
“Water entitlements are lumpy assets – you either own the lot or you own nothing. In a volatile climate, that’s not the most efficient use of resources.
“We’re delighted to see this project come to fruition as a trial. We’ve watched its development over the past 5 years and believe that it is now at a stage that will offer the water market and all participants a product that they will find extremely useful.
The RGA is delighted to note that the Commonwealth Government and Minister Tony Burke have supported the trial to date and look forward to that support continuing.
Representatives of River Reach will attend RGA Branch meetings in early June to provide further information on the product and full details are available at www.riverreach.com.au
