RICE COMMUNITY

Contribution to Regional Australia

  • The rice industry directly employs over 8,000 people, the majority in regional Australia.
  • The industry is the major contributor to the regional economy in the Southern NSW irrigation region by contributing to supporting over 63 regional towns.
  • The 1986 Powell Report into the economic benefits of irrigated agriculture showed that for every $1 of rice production, $6 is generated in associated activity. This report also concluded that four jobs are created for each person employed in the rice industry.

“I think more than half the town is involved in the rice industry in one way or another. It has provided many regional towns with jobs beyond the farm gate.”
Joe Burns, Mayor of Leeton.

  • FamilyRice farmers spend over $100 million annually on inputs to grow rice.
  • Creation of many irrigation towns developed through the production of rice as the founding irrigation industry.
  • Rice growing families have stability of ownership, which provides security for many regional communities.

Young Ricegrowers’

The rice industry and in particular the RGA supports young rice growers as they are the future leaders our Australian rice industry. Scholarships at university, leadership programs and overseas study tours are some of the ways in which the industry supports it’s young farmers. The RGA organises an Annual Young Ricegrowers’ Event to bring members together to share ideas. If you would like more information about Young Ricegrowers’ events contact us.

Women In Rice

Women play a vital role in Australian agriculture and our Australian rice industry recognises the value of their contribution on farm. The industry sponsors women to attend conferences for rural women and is continuing to develop programs to increase the involvement of women in industry.
