All rice grown in New South Wales is sold to Ricegrowers Limited and is successfully marketed under the SunRice brand. SunRice has been marketing rice to our Australian communities for over 50 years and is Australia’s largest exporter of value-added food and the world’s fifth largest ricefood exporter. Over 1,000 staff are employed by SunRice and when added to family and employed staff on farms, the rice industry directly employs over 8,000 people, the majority in regional Australia. The industry is the major contributor to the regional economy in the Southern NSW irrigation region by contributing to supporting over 63 regional towns. Exporting Our Australian Rice The Australian rice industry is the most efficient in the world, operating without any production or export subsidies — unlike most of its major competitors. Australian rice competes in international markets, often against subsidised product and is prohibited from free entry into many countries because of trade barriers. The Rice Industry generates around $800 million in revenue pa, with more than $500 million from exports.
Rice around the world Only 25 million of the 600 million tonnes of world annual rice production is traded outside the country of origin. Therefore, although Australian rice only represents around 0.2% of world rice production, our exports represent over 4% of world trade. |
