SunRice announces Jan Cathcart Scholarship Recipient

SunRice has announced Alexandra Morona, who grew up on her family’s rice farm near Deniliquin, as the 2020 recipient of the Jan Cathcart Scholarship. The $30,000 scholarship will support Alexandra’s studies during her third year of a Bachelor of Animal Science degree at Charles Sturt University.

Now in its sixth year, the scholarship is designed to provide Alexandra, and all recipients, with financial support and hands-on industry experience to assist them in achieving their career goals.

Alexandra is interested in the complementary relationship between animals and crops for optimal production and sustainability, and the development of alternative feed options for production animals using cropping by-products.

“With the help of the Jan Cathcart Scholarship, I look forward to contributing to the rice industry through my interest in animal health/nutrition and agriculture. I hope to take advantage of placement opportunities within different parts of SunRice, and also hope to one day be involved with the latest innovations at CopRice,” Alexandra said.

In presenting Alexandra with her scholarship at a celebratory dinner in Leeton on 26 February, SunRice Chairman Mr Laurie Arthur said:

“Alexandra, like all our scholarship recipients, has agriculture and the rice industry at the centre of her plans for the future, demonstrating a commitment to the sector which is aligned with the Jan Cathcart Scholarship. Over a 43 year period, Jan made an enormous contribution to the rice industry, paving the way for other women in her field, and each year SunRice is pleased to have the opportunity to honour this commitment.”
