Berrigan Water Tower Project
RGA Landcare is excited to have a Local Landcare Coordinator based in Berrigan, supporting community groups such as the Berrigan Conservation Group and Tidy Towns Committee (BCGTTC). Recently, support included assisting with a successful $40,000 grant application for a water‑tank mural. This inspiring project features spray‑paint artwork by Alex Sugar that highlights Berrigan’s history, character, and natural beauty.
The finished mural depicted two local racing horses and celebrated many aspects of Berrigan: its racing heritage, working agricultural landscapes and the locally indigenous plants and birds that reflect the region’s natural character. The Local Landcare Coordinator was able to influence subtle additions to the design, ensuring the inclusion of bird (such as bush stone curlew, grey crowned babbler, superb parrot) and plant (such as Berrigan’s butter bush and emu bush) species that are either prevalent in Berrigan or were once common but are now scarce. These thoughtful additions help raise awareness of species important to the local environment.
Future collaboration will help guide landscaping and interpretation boards at the site. Having knowledgeable support on the ground has strengthened community efforts, and BCGTTC’s leadership has helped beautify the town, attract visitors, and put Berrigan proudly on the map.
